Mike Derrig is Vice President and Chief Underwriter at Symetra, where he leads the Individual Life Underwriting organization. With more than 20 years of industry experience spanning Symetra, Equitable, and Lincoln Financial Group, Mike is passionate about positioning underwriting as a competitive advantage. His approach focuses on anticipating the needs of partners, developing underwriting talent, and modernizing the underwriting experience. His leadership style centers on empowering his team, fostering bold thinking, and challenging people to redefine what is possible.
Mike is a past President of the Hartford/Springfield Underwriting Association and continues to serve the industry through committee and advisory board roles. He earned both his MBA and bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Connecticut and holds an AALU designation. Originally from Southern New Jersey, Mike is an avid Philadelphia sports fan. He lives in Tolland, Connecticut, with his wife and two children.
