This week, we highlight two AALU-endorsed candidates: Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Rep. Drew Ferguson (R-GA-3). Both of these lawmakers serve on committees that directly impact the profession, have a great understanding of our issues, and have strong relationships with AALU Ambassadors. We are proud to endorse both of these representatives in 2020!
Sen. Gary Peters has represented Michigan since 2014, when he became the only Democrat to win one of the open seats of the election cycle. Peters is admittedly “wonky,” holding degrees from four different colleges in Michigan and frequently reaching across the aisle to co-author legislation focusing on the inner gears of the government.
Sen. Peters describes himself as a pro-business centrist and has a background in the investment world. He previously served on the Financial Services committee in the House and understands and supports the life insurance and financial planning profession well.
AALU Ambassador Brendan Walsh (M Financial) has been forming a relationship with the senator over the years and will be hosting him for lunch in Washington, D.C. on April 2nd. Sen. Peters is a fantastic candidate that AALU is proud to endorse again this year.
Another candidate we’d like to highlight is Rep. Drew. Ferguson, who sits on the powerful House Ways and Means committee. Rep. Ferguson has served in the House since 2016, filling the spot of retiring Rep. Lynn Westmoreland. He was appointed as the chief deputy whip for the House Republicans in 2018.
In 2019, Rep. Ferguson was selected to serve on the Ways and Means Committee and also has a strong focus on labor and employment issues, among many others. He has indicated that he wants to implement policies that make America more competitive, remove barriers that keep people in poverty, and enact effective welfare entitlement reform that helps to move people forward.
AALU Ambassador Walter Helms began a relationship with Congressman Ferguson last year and will be hosting him for breakfast for the first time in D.C. at the end of the month. We look forward to seeing both Walt and Rep. Ferguson soon!
